WetterCube Next

A display for every room.

In parallel with the Fusion the Next is being developed: an additional module that complements the Fusion and is developed in step with it. A small satellite display (ESP32 CYD, 2.8 inch, 320×240) shows data from the Fusion, for example temperature and bio-weather in the office, allergens and forecast in the bedroom.

  • Page 1, temperature and bio-weather: weather icon, temperature with feels-like temperature, clock, min/max, up to four sensor values from the house and the bio-weather categories of your Fusion.
  • Page 2, allergens and forecast: your allergens with today’s level and the forecast for the next points in time.
  • No MQTT required: no MQTT broker, no Home Assistant, no cloud. Next finds the Fusion on the home network by itself and asks every 30 seconds.
  • Night mode: at night display off (tapping switches it on briefly) or dark and dimmed, according to the Fusion settings or your own times.
  • Easy to set up: install with the web installer, connect to your own Wi-Fi through the setup Wi-Fi, everything else in the web interface. Updates on a button press, with rollback.

Next is still in an early alpha phase and only runs together with a Fusion on the same network. Like the Fusion it is open source under the Apache License 2.0.

Technology

Version / status: v0.1.0-alpha5, early alpha

Maintenance: developed in parallel with the Fusion

Hardware: ESP32 CYD (ESP32-2432S028)

Display: 2.8", 320×240, ST7789

Operation: tapping turns the page

Data source: WetterCube Fusion (from v0.9.9-alpha6) over Wi-Fi

Case: print it yourself, notes to follow

Licence: Apache 2.0, source code open on GitHub

In development: Fusion and Next are still in development (alpha). Errors can occur with the current versions.

WetterCube Next: only the described CYD. The software is meant for the ESP32 CYD ESP32-2432S028 (2.8", 320×240, ST7789). CYD boards differ depending on the vendor, for example in the display controller, the colours or the orientation.

Other boards are not supported and can cause problems. So buy exactly the named boards. As soon as more boards are available, board-specific versions are to be offered in the long term; there is no fixed date yet.

The pages

What the Next looks like

Two pages that you turn by tapping. The pictures come straight from the device (320×240, pixel-exact).

Night mode

At night the Next switches the display off (tapping switches it on briefly) or changes to a dark design and dims:

Allergens and forecast at night
At night: page 2

Important: WetterCube is a software project. I provide the software (firmware); you do the building yourself: you buy the matching board (for WetterCube and WetterCubePlus also the display), flash the firmware and design a case to your own taste. I try to offer matching cases for the individual cubes, but the focus is on the software. Finished devices are not offered. You find short build guides under Build guide.

Language and region: The WetterCube project is currently only available in German. Because the weather data for warnings, pollen forecast and bio-weather comes from the German Weather Service (DWD), it currently only works completely in Germany. A translation into English and weather information usable worldwide are planned, but there is no fixed date yet.
