Usage notes

What you should know before installing

Short and honest: WetterCube is a hobby open-source project. Here is what that means for you.

At your own risk

You use the software and the guides on your own responsibility; I accept no liability for damage or consequences. You should roughly know what you are doing: flashing a board, setting up Wi-Fi and, with WetterCube and WetterCubePlus, crimping cables and soldering. If anything is unclear, please ask first; I am glad to help through the contact form or on GitHub (issues).

When flashing, you can usually not break much on an ESP32: the board can be flashed again at any time. Real damage is more likely to come from wrong wiring or a wrong voltage.

The installation erases the memory

Flashing erases the flash memory of the board, including saved Wi-Fi data and settings. Afterwards you set the device up again.

Only the named boards

WetterCube Fusion: Waveshare boards only. The software is only reliably supported on exactly these boards: the Waveshare ESP32-P4-WIFI6-Touch-LCD-7B and, as long as the P4 board is not yet supported, the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-7B. Combined boards with a display often differ from vendor to vendor in display, touch or connectors.

WetterCube Next: only the described CYD. The software is meant for the ESP32 CYD ESP32-2432S028 (2.8", 320×240, ST7789). CYD boards differ depending on the vendor, for example in the display controller, the colours or the orientation.

Other boards are not supported and can cause problems. So buy exactly the named boards. As soon as more boards are available, board-specific versions are to be offered in the long term; there is no fixed date yet.

In development

Fusion and Next are still in development (alpha). Errors can occur with the current versions. WetterCubePlus and WetterCube are finished and stable.

Weather data for information only

Weather data, warnings, pollen forecast and bio-weather are for information only. They can be incomplete or delayed and replace neither official warnings (for example NINA or the DWD WarnWetter app) nor medical advice.

Power and safety

All WetterCubes run on low voltage (5 V over USB). Only operate them with a tested power supply and pay attention to correct wiring and voltage during assembly (WetterCube and WetterCubePlus are crimped and soldered): mistakes can destroy parts or cause heat. Switch a device off at once if it gets hot or smells unusual. Do not use any WetterCube for safety-critical purposes.

With the switch tiles the Fusion switches devices in the smart home. Anyone switching sockets or lamps quickly deals with mains voltage (230 V): only use ready-made, tested and approved devices (for example smart plugs) and have any work on the house wiring done by a qualified electrician. Do not switch anything that health or safety depends on (heating, cooker, medical or safety equipment): the device can fail or switch wrongly.

Language and region

The WetterCube project is currently only available in German. Because the weather data for warnings, pollen forecast and bio-weather comes from the German Weather Service (DWD), it currently only works completely in Germany. A translation into English and weather information usable worldwide are planned, but there is no fixed date yet.

Licence

The source code of WetterCubePlus, Fusion and Next is under the Apache License 2.0, that of WetterCube under MIT. You may use, change and pass on everything, commercially too. The licences expressly exclude liability. Texts and images are under CC BY-NC 4.0; the WetterCube name and logos are not licensed. The free Open-Meteo weather interface is only meant for non-commercial use; anyone using this commercially needs their own licence from Open-Meteo.
